Sun Lee
NL - Sun Lee (1985, KR) is een textielkunstenaar en sociaal ontwerper. Voordat ze zich in Nederland vestigde, runde ze in Korea haar modemerk ALEELANG. Toen haar kleding in een Koreaans warenhuis werd verkocht, besefte ze zich plotseling hoe ongelooflijk veel kleren er werden uitgestald. Achter de prachtige etalages is kleding echter niets anders dan stof die weer wordt weggegooid als het seizoen voorbij is. Na die realisatie werd ze sceptisch over de mode-industrie en de wereldwijde impact op het milieu. Ze onderzocht de mode-industrie in afgelopen jaren en stelde zichzelf vragen over de relatie tussen mode en traditie, maar ook over de verhouding tussen mens en natuur. Welke kleding maken we, van welk materiaal en wat dragen we? En kan mode ooit echt duurzaam worden? In Paper Art wordt de serie papieren kleding van Sun Lee getoond (gerealiseerd op de Design Academy Eindhoven), getiteld Consumption of heritage. Het zijn vesten en jassen gemaakt van traditioneel Koreaans papier, getiteld Hanji. Daarnaast zijn er voor Paper Art drie nieuwe werken duurzaam gefabriceerd en uitgesneden met de lasersnijder in CODA ExperienceLab.
ENG - Sun Lee (b. Korea, 1985) is a textile artist and social designer. Before she left Korea and settled in the Netherlands, she managed her own fashion brand, ALEELANG. When she saw her clothing on sale in a Korean department store, she was struck by the incredibly wide range of colours on display. But despite their beauty, clothes are really just pieces of fabric that are thrown away when the season is over. This realisation made Lee sceptical about the fashion industry and its impact on the global environment. Over recent years, she has studied the sector and asked herself questions about the relationships between fashion and tradition, and between humans and nature. What clothing do we make, from what materials, and what do we wear? And can fashion ever be truly sustainable? In Paper Art, we see a range of clothes made by Sun Lee at Design Academy Eindhoven and entitled Consumption of heritage. These waistcoats and jackets are created using traditional handmade Korean hanji paper. The exhibition also includes three new and sustainably manufactured pieces made using the laser cutter at CODA ExperienceLab.
