101 Vrouwen versierd

English

arrow-large Created with Sketch.

A dark-haired woman gazes at you intently. Her hands seem ready to grab you. Between her mouth and her fingers a red piece of string is stretched in the shape of a star. We are looking at photographer Maria Austria (1915-1975) from the book 1001 Vrouwen uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis (1001 women from Dutch history) by historian Els Kloek, as reworked by visual artist Marijke Schurink. From 4 March up to and including 27 May 2018 , CODA Museum gives an overview of this unique project.

Marijke Schurink is fascinated by the women in Kloek’s 1001 Vrouwen uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis. Besides fifteenth-century oil paintings of Jacoba of Bavaria and Margaret of Austria, 101 Vrouwen versierd (101 women adorned) includes black-and-white photos of Etty Hillesum, Ina Brouwer and a colour photograph of Mathilde Willink from the 1970s. Schurink printed the portraits from the book as photos and then reworked them using collage-like techniques. She cut, embroidered, scratched, braided or added objects to the original pictures. By doing so, she created autonomous new images. Schurink chose the portraits because of a certain look, atmosphere, the colours, or a pose and attitude, and also let herself be inspired by the history of the portrayed women. Schurink: “The portraits are about what they are in themselves. I am fascinated by a glance, an image on a tombstone, colours in a three-hundred-year-old oil painting, or just a good face. Reworked, processed, but without a verbal explanation, interpretation or story, a series of 101 ‘adorned’ women evolved.”

In her earlier work Ceci n’est pas un bijou, Schurink applied jewellery to classic paintings and captured the result with a photo camera. For the series Portretten van Curaçao, she worked on and in existing aquarelles. With 101 Vrouwen versierd she takes it one step further by not limiting herself to just the neck and reworking the entire portrait, thus creating a new, layered image. With its size, material and shape, jewellery usually refers to the body. A jewellery portrait changes this perspective. In this context, the piece of jewellery or adornment is freed from the restriction of wearability, allowing Schurink to enter new territory. She pushes the boundaries and meaning of jewellery and so creates an autonomous, new image.

The entire series of portraits is exhibited in CODA Museum from 4 March up to and including 27 May 2018. The exhibited jewellery portraits are accompanied by information about the portrayed people in order to offer a broad view on important women in Dutch history. Marijke Schurink is currently working on a book about this project. The introduction of the book is written by Els Kloek.
