Michihiro Sato

Michihiro Sato has been working with paper since the 1990s. After finishing his training in Japan, he spent 16 years in Germany, becoming interested in paper as a material, possibly out of longing for his homeland. Fragility is a key word in the oeuvre of the Japanese jewellery maker. Although he finds it daunting at times, Sato loves the challenge of finding ways to deal with this in his work. In some of his works he counterbalances fragility. In these cases, he chooses to combine the perishable paper with materials like copper or silver, which are more ‘durable’. Thus, transience and eternity are brought together in one object.
