Helmie Brugman (1957, Nederland)

For the installation The Paper Davids, Helmie Brugman used egg cardboard as her base material. The mushed pulp was shaped in a plaster mould without the use of glue. Separate cardboard prints of the body were then put together, resulting in boy figures. Other interventions also created differences, for instance the charring of some of the parts. Human existence, with its ups and downs, is Brugman’s main departure point. The Paper Davids shows five boy figures, idealised in terms of shape, yet also vulnerable and alienating. A close look at her work raises existential questions about idealisation, the malleability of our existence and transience.
